PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT: MAINTENANCE WORKER II – WATER/WASTEWATER

Full Time Position.  Performs tasks in the maintenance of the Village’s collection, distribution, pumping and storage, and treatment facilities.   Must be able to work on-call duty after normal work hours, nights, weekends, and holidays if needed and be able to perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions.  Requires ability to use standard equipment used in water and wastewater maintenance.  High School diploma, general education degree (GED), or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Moderate to heavy lifting required.  Required to obtain a CDL license Class B with Tanker Endorsement and a Grade I Water Distribution Operator License from ADH Water Distribution within the first year of employment. SUMMARY  This position performs tasks in the maintenance of the Village’s collection, distribution, pumping and storage, and treatment facilities or streets.  Employees in this class are distinguished from maintenance Work I by degree of skill, independent judgment, amount of on-the-job training experience, ability to operate equipment, and skill in supervising others.  Requires valid Arkansas driver’s license and clean driving record with proof of liability insurance.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Maintenance of water distribution system, wastewater collection system, pumping, and treatment facilities.
  2. Positions, joins, aligns, and connects pipe sections and associated fittings.
  3. Must be able to read and follow underground utility plans and prints.
  4. Prepare routine reports as required.
  5. Operate hand tools and pipe saws, etc.
  6. Load and unload trucks which includes carrying heavy material such as pipe, maintenance materials, and tools.
  7. Keep all tools and material in a proper manner.
  8. Be able to work in confined areas, manholes and uneven terrain in varying weather conditions.  Ability to climb in and out of open trenches.
  9. General electrical knowledge to assist master electrician may be required.
  10. May be required to work periodically for Sanitation/Recycling Department as trash collector.
  11. Follow all Property Owners’ Association (POA) policies and safety rules.
  12. May direct the work of other maintenance personnel.
  13. May receive or be required to gain additional training.
  14. Required to obtain a CDL license within 60 days of being employed. Will be required to drive a POA vehicle or personal vehicle while conducting POA business.
  15. Ability to stand, walk and bend for many hours during the work day.
  16. Other duties as assigned.
  17. Regular attendance is required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE  High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions.  Ability to read and understand utility pipe plans.  Ability to read a limited number of two- and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and difference between words and between series of numbers.  Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS  Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.  Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS    Requires a valid Arkansas drivers license and clean driving record with proof of liability insurance.  May be required to obtain a commercial driver’s license.
